Human Biases in Creative AI: An Ethics Case Study

Creativity: the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc.;

Background:

When writer Viet Thanh Nguyen spoke at Phillips Exeter Academy assembly, he spoke a lot about narrative scarcity, where stories of minorities are rarely told or portrayed accurately in the creative industry. An example he used in his New York Times Op-Ed is that of Asian representation in movies.

“Many Americans will take these Asian images [in movies] — which are usually awful — and transfer them to any Asian-American they encounter.”

Modern-day creativity is derivative of people’s experiences and preconceived notions which culminate into stereotyped biases. Filmmakers, painters, writers, or even sculptors are always using their experiences and biases to make their creations. These biased creations will ultimately impact how the viewers’ thoughts and actions.

Before reading on, take out a piece of paper and a pen. Set a 3 minute timer and draw a picture of an imaginary firefighter.
